TOURIST DETINATIONS AT PUSHKAR

Pushkar is a city located in Rajasthan, India and it has great cultural and historical tradition and importance for it.  The city’s location is important as the city has the most well known lake and the annual cattle fair.
The ‘Pilgrim City’ Pushkar is located on 26°27’ North latitude and 74°37’ East longitude, at an elevation of 530m above mean sea level. It lies on the eastern fringe of the Thar Desert and is 14 Km west of Ajmer, separated by Nag Pahar (Snake Mountain). The development of Pushkar through centuries has been influenced by its location.

Jzahangir’s palace

This monument is located south of the lake along the Parikrama path. It was built by Jahangir in 1670 AD to celebrate his victory over Maharaja Amar Singh of Mewar. It is a protected monument.

Brahma Temple

This is the only temple in the world where Lord Brahma is worshiped and the main attraction of Pushkar. The temple has a special position in Hindu pantheons. There is life-size four-armed idol of Lord Brahma - the creator in the vestibule. The temple has marble floors and stairs and coins have been put by the devotees to mark the birth or deaths of the loved ones.

Savitri Temple

The temple is dedicated to Savitri, the wife of Lord Brahma and located on the top of the Ratnagiri Hill. According to the legends when Lord Brahma performed a Yagna (holy fire devoted to gods) along with Gayatri, a local milkmaid, furious Savitri cursed her husband that he would never be worshipped anywhere except in Pushkar and that too only once a year. Savitri left for the Ratnagiri Hill after cursing her husband and immolated herself there. There is beautiful statue of Goddess Savitri inside the temple.

Varah Temple

The Varah temple of Hindu was built in the 12th century and, and the Mughal emperor Aurangzeb is said to have destroyed it. Aurangzeb was understandably rather upset with the huge statue of Varah, the god with the body of a man and the head of a boar. However, Raja Sawai Jai Singh II of Jaipur thought differently, and in 1727 reconstructed the temple which now has a highly decorated inner sanctum where an idol of Varah is placed.

Old Rangji Temple

The Rangji temple is very gracious. It is considered very conspicuous, due to its south Indian style of architecture. The temple has a high rising 'Gopuram', typical of southern India.

Pap Mochini Temple

Towards the northen section of Pushkar is the Pap Mochini temple, not really popular for its architecture or deity but for the simple belief that anyone who kills a Brahmin will be purified of this deed by visiting the Hindu temple, of course, all that was applicable in olden times.
